014: Becoming a Real Estate Agent with an Investor’s Eye with Basia Bubel
It’s unusual to hear about a real estate agent who started their real estate career as an investor. However, a real estate agent with that knowledge comes to the field with a breadth of experience most realtors just don’t have.
What an experienced investor can bring to the transaction table includes recognizing when someone is a baby investor and needs a realtor with the time to teach them. They can spot a great deal and realize when the agent on the other side of the table isn’t going to be easy to work with.
In this episode of The Art of Agency, Basia Bubel joins Jonathan and Mallory to talk about her transition from investor to real estate agent. Basia knew she didn’t want to return to an office when a life circumstance changed and made it necessary for her to create a regular income. With her experience as a real estate investor, she decided on real estate as a career and has been doing well ever since.
Basia recognizes some problems in real estate today and shares her thoughts with Jonathan and Mallory on how to fix it, including why relationships between realtors need to improve, why attorneys can wreck a sale, and the importance of best practices.
In this episode, you will hear:
Why Basia obtained her real estate license as an investor and her transition into sales
How she overcame the negative perceptions of realtors and her “aha” moment
Basia’s reluctance to work with investors because they rely on her to teach them and how you can weed them out
The difficulty she’s experienced in creating relationships with other agents and what she’s done to overcome it
The reason she assumes that she’s going to do most of the work on a transaction and how it benefits both sides
Why resourcefulness, a willingness to ask questions, and approachability make you a better agent
How attorneys can wreck a sale
Real estate agents’ lack of knowledge surrounding multifamily investing
Sexism in real estate, how Basia handles it, and the importance of including all parties on the deed in the decisionmaking
Why the biggest problem she sees in real estate right now is the lack of best practices
